The North East Assembly closed on 31 March 2009, due to the impact of local government reorganisation on 1 April 2009, and the Government's sub national review of economic development and regeneration, which called for regional assemblies to end by 2010.

The interim North East Planning Body (NEPB) was established to deliver statutory responsibilites and informal work to gather evidence and set up governance structures to develop a North East Strategy.

New regional arrangements

In May 2010 the Coalition Government announced that regional strategies would be abolished. Funding for this work programme has now ceased and the CLG funded team working on the development of the North East Strategy was disbanded in July 2010.
