Sustainable consumption and production
The North East Assembly (NEA) and the Association of North East Councils (ANEC) led and contributed to a number of studies in relation to sustainable consumption and production. Counting Consumption: North East (2006) The NEA was a key partner in the 2006 WWF led 'Counting Consumption: North East' report which provided a statistical and scientific basis upon which to develop sustainable consumption and production policies. This project developed an ecological footprint for North East England, and identified that people in the region use three times their fair earth share, and that a step change was required to move the North East to a one planet economy. Counting Consumption: North East North East England Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Baselines and Trajectories (2009) The NEA was a partner in Sustaine's North East England Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Baselines and Trajectories Study (2009) which measured the contribution the region is making to targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This study provided an overview of emissions generated by activities occurring within North East England (producer emissions), and identified that existing policies and actions will not deliver the reductions required, for North East England to meet UK emission reduction targets. Assessing the impacts of economic growth on consumption and the environment (2009) ANEC led on a study which assessed the impacts of economic growth on consumption and the environment. Each product or service that is purchased has its own environmental impact embedded within it. This study measured these impacts in terms of greenhouse gas emissions or consumer emissions. The study showed the extent to which consumption behaviour in North East England is a driver of greenhouse gas emissions both within the North East, and elsewhere.
