North East England Housing Strategy 2007: Quality places for a dynamic region
In May 2010 the Coalition Government announced that the Regional Spatial Strategy was to be abolished. As a non-statutory document, the North East England Housing Strategy: Quality places for a dynamic region remains as a guide for local authorities developing their housing strategies and to assist with regeneration arrangements. The North East England Housing Strategy contains the aims and priorities for housing in the region. It provides a framework to encourage the development of housing solutions at regional, sub-regional and local levels. It seeks to influence private and public sector investment decisions and sets the strategic context within which housing providers can operate. The strategy will be kept up to date at least every two years. The housing strategy does not seek to identify and consider every initiative related to housing in the North East, instead it aims to further develop our priorities and policies from previous versions of the strategy. There has been extensive consultation on these priorities with all those who have a stake in the future of North East England's housing. The North East England Housing Strategy is based on four long-term strategic objectives and to support each objective the North East Assembly (NEA) identified a range of specific actions for itself and partners to deliver. The four strategic objectives of the housing strategy are to: - rejuvenate the housing stock, including the provision of high quality housing for rent, for sale and for shared ownership to meet 21st century demands. To replace market failure with high quality housing in the right locations to help create successful, cohesive sustainable communities;
- ensure the supply, type and mix of new housing for rent and for sale meets social and economic needs, provides choice and supports growth. This will reflect the diversity of urban and rural communities and the needs for affordable, family and executive housing;
- secure the improvement and maintenance of existing housing so that it meets required standards, and invest in sustainable neighbourhoods; and
- promote good management and targeted housing investment to address specific community and social needs, including an ageing population and the needs of minority communities. This will be aligned with the supporting people programme and will promote greater community involvement.
