Exchange Partnership with North East England

Moravia-Silesia was one of the suggested partner regions, along with Skåne of Sweden, North Jutland of Denmark, Oberösterreich of Austria and South East Ireland, in the European Strategic Alliances Study prepared by researchers at Newcastle Universityand Strathclyde Universityfor North East England. In September 2004, the North East Assembly (NEA) and Government Office for the North East (GONE)signed a partnership agreement with Moravia-Silesia in Ostrava.

The agreement forms a strategic alliance to enable the sharing of experiences and facilitate learning, as well as for co-operation, transportation, crisis management, culture, education and tourism. This 5-year agreement represents a part of a process of fostering good relations and friendly co-operation between the UK and the Czech Republic, especially following the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union in 2004. The President of the Region, Mr. E. Tošenovsky, Cllr. M. Davey, then Lead member for Europe at the North East Regional Assembly, and Mr. A. Lewis, then of Government Office for the North East, participated in the signing ceremony.
